Both have had successes - in this case, its a plugin called Grass-o-matic - so the grass is actual geometry, which isn't usually possible - I go for displacement when you're looking from a distance.

Displacement (sub-poly) is still expensive! check this out - very quick product with poor rendering values...but...

I think the key (on a more broad and realistic scale) is distance-culling and excluding from radiosity. Easily said though.
(what is it with the RS quality of 'Blogger's video? Is there any way to improve the resolution via a third party? sheesh.
